Description

Elocution Contest
The twenty-fourth annual elocution contest took place in the Liberal Arts
Auditorium on Sunday, May 30. John L. Tarrant of Davenport was the successful
contestant. His effective rendition of his selection, "Shaggy Dan," won first
place and the gold medal awarded by the Rt. Rev. Bishop for excellence in elocution.
Mr. Tarrant interpreted the difficult character of his piece wonderfully well.
His ease and confidence, together with his gracefulness, proclaimed the finished
elocutionist. In fact his whole manner showed careful training and his success
was a worthy tribute to the efficiency of his instructor.
Second place went to Benedict McConville of Mystic, Iowa. His selection was
oratorical and the spirit and dash with which it was delivered mark Mr. McConville as a gifted speaker. His voice was full and of remarkable carrying quality,
very appropriate for a selection requiring force and power.
Every number merited special mention, but Raymond McGrath, next to the
prize winners, particularly deserved to be commended. August Van Wonterghen
and Charles Toynbee also distinguished themselves.
Rev. L. J. Enright, rector of Holy Family Church; E. J. Carroll, grand
knight of Loras Council, K. of C, and Joseph Halligan acted as judges of the
contest.
