appeared on the local floor and won a fast and furious game by a field basket
thrown in the last minute of play. The final score was 16 to 14. The next day
St. Ambrose played a return game with Wartburg of Clinton and were beaten by
a score of 29 to 26. The game was hard fought but St. Ambrose was handicapped
by the size of the gymnasium. The ceiling was very low and interferred with the
padding and basket shooting. A week later the team journeyed to Hopkington and
met the Lenox five in a rough but fast game on their home floor. Here too, the
size of the gymnasium was a disadvantage to the St. Ambrose team. It was in
this game that Healey showed his great work at guard. The game ended with St.
Ambrose holding the short end of a 24 to 43 score.
The return game with Dubuque was played a week later on the St. Ambrose
floor and the up-river quintet again succeeded in defeating the blue and white.
The game was fast and scrappy, and the victory for Dubuque was not certain
until the last minute of play. St. Ambrose was badly crippled by the absence of
Coonan from most of the game. The game ended with a 15 to 6 score, favoring
Dubuque. Spaulding of Peoria was the next game on the schedule. The game
was played at St. Ambrose March 3rd. The game was fast and well played, but
the Peoria forwards were unable to elude the close guarding of the Ambrosians.
E. O'Toole, Wehr and Coonan starred in scoring while Ryan did excellent work
at guard. The final score was 36 to 9 in favor of St. Ambrose.
The last game of the season was played eight days later at St. Ambrose, our
opponents being the Knox College from Galesburg. The game proved the fastest
game ever played on the St. Ambrose floor and the boys displayed plenty of the
old St. Ambrose fighting spirit from whistle to whistle. The final score was 17
to 11.
Letters were awarded to the following men: Capt. G. O'Toole, Capt.-elect
Coonan, J. Troy, E. O'Toole, R. Lee, M. Healey and E. Wehr. The development of
the team was due in a large measure to the faithful work of Cranny, Cashman,
King and G. Miller.
