Description

As the Juniors Appear To Us
Paddy S. McGinness came to S. A. C. to stay,
To try to get some wisdom and brush the webs away.
He came out here from Ireland and left his folks in tears;
When he finishes his studies here 'twill be some goodly years.
And when our lessons all are done, we gather round about
And listen to the fairy tales that Paddy tells about.
When the Irishman is finished and wears a serious look,
We all burst out in laughter—Pat gets sore and grabs a book.
Peter Bissen is a German and a lad of jolly mirth;
Long he's been here at the College and the "Profs" all know his worth.
He's the president of the German's Bonifacius Verein;
Und wenn er spricht a piece for them, they clap and think it's fine.
Dear friends he has among the boys, the little ones as well,
They like real well this German light and rejoice his fame to tell.
We know that Pete will do great things when he finishes his course;
I'm sure some day we'll hear him give a powerful discourse.
David Murphy hails from Tampico, among the quiet hills.
But once he heard of S. A. C. and worked and paid his bills,
And packed his clothes for college bound, and bade his friends farewell.
'Twas hard for him to do it, but he gave up little "Nelle."
Dave 's deep in his discussion; indeed, he is quite subtle—
In debating he's a whirlwind and a cyclone in rebuttal.
And yet (note well the paradox), he's always staid and grave.
I'm sure we ne'er again shall see another man like Dave.
Raymond Beecher has been with this class for five long years of time.
(You know he doubled up one year, 'cause in classes he is fine.)
He can use the very biggest words that mortal ever heard;
And when he starts declaiming, he makes us all feel so absurd.
But some may think the youth's stuck up; he's not, I know him well;
It's just his disposition, he's magnanimous, that's all.
And when the marks are handed round, Ray surely will be best
Of that whole Junior Class, so wise; he'll far excell the rest.
George Millet from Ottumwa found his way into the crowd;
He's good in all his classes, but meek "Susie" isn't proud.
He excells in mathematics, for he dreams of it by night
And wakes up in the morning solving theorems with delight.
Our George is so good-natured that you can never make him mad,
And the only cuss he ever says is "Gosh" or else "By Dad."
Some day George will be an engineer, to work out with glee
All the knowledge he acquired from his course at S. A. C.
A SENIOR.
