Description

MASS IN E MINOR
by
Anton Bruckner
In 1856 the composer was appointed organist at the Cathedral of
Linz. Here he began to compose seriously, annually spending some
weeks in Vienna studying theory with Simon Sechter. It was at Linz
that Bruckner first heard the music of Wagner. From then on he was
a great admirer and disciple of Wagner.
In 1866 Bruckner met Hans von Bulow and showed the great conductor some of his compositions. Von Bulow was much impressed and
gave encouragement to the composes. In 1868 he was appointed to
succeed his teacher, Sechter, at the Vienna Conservatory. During
this same period, he was doing concert tours as organist in England
and France. One of his great pupils at the Conservatory was Magler.
It is interesting to see the influence from Wagner to Bruckner to
Mahler.
The Mass in E Minor is the second of three composed at Linz. This is
the most lyric and probably the most original of the three. The orchestra is used merely to reinforce the voices in climaxes, a characteristic device of the 17th century polyphonic style. It is written for eight
voice choir wind orchestra and organ.
