Presidents, 1985-2005, Dr. Norm Nielsen, 2000
Title
Presidents, 1985-2005, Dr. Norm Nielsen, 2000
Description
Dr. Norm Nielsen was the longest-tenured chief officer in the college's history. In a 20-year span he along with Trustee Wayne Newton and the wider community embraced the concept of business and industry partnerships. Through this ongoing effort, the National Alliance of Business awarded Kirkwood the Community College of the Year award in 2000. Among these partnerships were joint ventures with St. Luke's Hospital and the Tipton Center, Diamond V Mills to build an animal nutrition center on campus, and AEGON USA to build a corporate data center on the main campus.
Campus construction and improvements were evident all over the main campus and surrounding counties under Norm's leadership. Construction of Kirkwood Hall and expansions to Washington Hall, the Mansfield Swine and Tippie Beef Center preceded the construction of the Iowa Equestrian Center. Norm worked in earnest with the Kirkwood Foundation and community donors to garner well over $60 million in donations and in-kind support to the college. For this and all of the contributions he and his late wife, Marian, made to the college, the Business and Information Technology building was dedicated as Nielsen Hall in 2004. Upon his retirement the Kirkwood Board of Trustees honored Dr. Norm Nielsen as President Emeritus for providing outstanding and distinguished service. He retired in January 2005.
