After Dr. Ballantyne's untimely death, Ira Larson was called upon to lead Kirkwood Community College as Interim President at a time when the college community was grieving the lost of their previous leader and to give the Board time to search for a new leader.
Mr. Larson was no stranger to the community college movement or Kirkwood since he helped craft the Iowa legislative bill, Senate File 550, to create the Iowa community college system. He was probably more responsible than anyone else for making certain that the Merged Area Ten, the future Kirkwood multi-county district, was the first district in the state to place its proposal for establishment of a college on the governor's desk on June 1, 1965. He also served as Kirkwood's assistant superintendent from 1970-1977 and 1978.
Ira was the "quiet giant" behind Dr. Ballantyne and Board President B. A. Jensen. The vision of these three men shaped the culture and direction the college would ultimately take. Dr. Ballantyne was known as the dreamer and Ira would translate the dreams into reality.
The Kirkwood board acknowledged his important role with the college by giving him the permanent designation of Assistant Superintendent Emeritus on October 26, 1978.
