Kirkwood, Samuel statue
Title
Kirkwood, Samuel statue
Description
After students petitioned the Board of Directors for "a more humanized name" rather than Area Ten Community College, a lengthy process ensued until just the right name was found. The Board approved the name Kirkwood Community College on August 25, 1969 out of the 160 proposed names. The name was selected in honor of Samuel J. Kirkwood, who served as governor and U.S. Senator of Iowa and U.S. Secretary of the Interior during the mid-to-late 1800's. He was involved in the development of higher education in Iowa and valued the importance of vocational training. The statue, which is a replica of the one that still stands in the U.S. capitol rotunda, was gifted to Kirkwood from the University of Iowa in 1974. It stood in the Linn Hall lobby from 1974 until 2014 when it was moved outdoors to the roundabout at the front entrance.
