Memorials - Oliven, Dr. Mel
Title
Memorials - Oliven, Dr. Mel
Description
Dr. Mel Oliven, astronomy and physics professor 1968-1975, died unexpectedly in an air plane crash on March 5, 1975. This photo was taken in 1971 at an all-college open house. The Mel Oliven lecture series was initiated in his memory to educate Kirkwood students and the public on scientific and environmental issues. Dr. William S. Blagen, population ecologist from Iowa State University, delivered the first lecture on May 15, 1977. This is the longest running lecture series at the college and is made possible by the Oliven Endowment of the Kirkwood Foundation.
