YOUNG BEES Mature and "Jell" During Season
The 1964-65 basketball season
was a period of rebuilding for the
once powerful Bees. Coach Bob
Duax began the season with many
distinct disadvantages against him.
Lack of the all important element
of height was the main problem.
The team as a whole only averaged
6-2/2 in height. Inexperience was
another problem that plagued the
Bees. Only two seniors and three
juniors were back from last year's
team.
The Bees opened the season right
after the Thanksgiving holiday. They
travelled to Platteville, Wisconsin
to take on Platteville College. First
game tension showed on the Bees
as they went down to defeat 83-67.
The Bees opened their home season
with a 64-59 loss to St. Mary's of
Winona, Minnesota. Tony McAn-
drew's and Joe Krippel, co-captains
scored 12 and 11, respectively. The
Bees stretched their winless string
to four as they fell victims to Monmouth and Parson. Lou Kaiser,
talented Sophomore, took scoring
honors in both games.
The Bees broke into the win
column with a victory over Iowa
Wesleyan 71-70. Then they came
back with two straight loses to Lewis
and St. Norbert.
While everyone was taking a
break for the holidays, the Bees
were getting ready for the first annual St. Ambrose College Holiday
Tournament. St. Ambrose played
host to Loras, Carthage, and Central.
The first night of action saw Carthage take Loras 68-64, and Central
downing the Bees 61-51. The final
night of action saw Central beating
Carthage 74-57, to take the title. The
Bees went down to Loras 81-80.
Kaiser averaged 25 points for two
games, thereby earning a spot on the
tournament team.
The Bees started off the new year
on the wrong foot. They opened
with loses to Coe and Luther. Loras
came to town in mid-January, and
it was a typical St. Ambrose-Loras
game. The Bees shot better than
50% in downing the Duhawks 80-
69. The Bees next went down to
four powerful small college teams.
The Bees ended the season on
the right foot with wins over Illinois
Tech, 99-69, and Dubuque University, 89-82.
