Description

TENTH PRESIDENT
Installed
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Sebastian G.
Menke assumed his duties as the
tenth president of St. Ambrose College, on June 21, 1964, succeeding
the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William J. Collins.
Monsignor received his B.A. degree from St. Ambrose College, his
M.A. degree in German from the
Catholic University of America, and
his doctorate degree in Latin and
Greek from the State University of
Iowa.
Following his ordination in 1938,
he was immediately assigned to St.
Ambrose where he taught German,
Latin, Greek, Ancient History and
Astronomy.
Monsignor Menke was elevated to
the rank of Domestic Prelate by
His Holiness Pope Paul VI. On December 9, 1964, he received the red
robes from Bishop Ralph Leo Hayes.
He is an active member in the
Classical Association of the Midwest and South, the American Assc
ciation of University Professors, the
National Catholic Education Association and the American Classical
League.
"I am grateful to Bishop Ralph
L. Hayes for the confidence he has
shown in me by appointing me President of St. Ambrose College. I have
been associated with the College as
student and teacher almost continuously since 1926, and naturally the
institution means a great deal to me.
"Anyone interested in higher education is aware that many problems
confront the small private colleges
today. St. Ambrose College shares
these problems. However, we think
that with the support of the community, the Diocese of Davenport
and our alumni these problems can
be overcome successfully; that the
College will continue to grow and
to provide the kind of higher education that its supporters expect; and
that the faculty and students will
continue to be of service to the community."
We, the staff of the 1965 OAKS,
offer our congratulations to Monsignor and wish him success in the
administration of his duties.
