Description

BISHOP HAYES
Appoints
His Excellency Bishop Ralph L.
Hayes, Bishop of Davenport for the
past twenty years, has held among
his primary interests, the College
and the Community. He has expressed this interest in the following
words:
"Education has always been an
integral part of the American tradition. Historians will pass divergent
judgments on the development of
our nation. Some will praise the hardihood of the colonists who threw
off the yoke of tyranny and founded
a new and independent nation.
Others will note the courage of the
pioneers who crossed mountains and
rivers and forests to extend the
American drama from the Atlantic
to the Pacfic. Still others will emphasize the spirit of true liberty
which is a priceless heritage with
which America has endowed the millions of people who flocked to her
shores in search of freedom. But no
historian will ignore the American
passion for education — a phenomenon which manifested itself in the
beginnings of our national existence
and has grown into the marvelous system of American education —
public, private, and religious—which
is the boast of our nation and often
the envy of less fortunate peoples.
"St. Ambrose College is part of
and for more than eighty years has
served the community of Davenport.
It has grown with this community. It
began with a handful of students
when Davenport had a population
of less than 25,000. It now has an enrollment of 1100 students in a city
of 93,000 inhabitants. St. Ambrose
College and its alumni exits to serve
the community and are an integral
and important part of the community. The aim of the college is to train
Christian American men who will
prepare themselves as workers and
leaders in society. The public record
of its alumni in the community is
proof of its contribution to the
Quint Cities. St. Ambrose College
is proud to be a part of the community; it wishes the community to
be part of it."
