Larry "Moon" Mullins second regime at St. Ambrose
College found the former University of Notre Dame grid
great leading the Bees through the 1947 football season
with five wins on the home field and three losses en
the road.
Assisting Coach Mullins with football were Leo Deutsch,
Dan McKinnon and James O'Connor.
Total attendance for St. Ambrose College five home
games totaled 33,500 which broke all previous home
attendance records for the Ambrosians. With Loras, St.
Norbert, and Bradley University coming to town in 1948,
another all time high is expected for the Ambrose turnstiles.
Davenport, Sept. 21—The St. Ambrose College football team sloshed through heavy mud this afternoon to
few plays later Dave Beiser, St. Ambrose tackle, blocked
a DeKalb punt on the 12 yard line and Jack Errion recovered over the goal line for the second six pointer.
Vince Carlin convereted both extra point attempts.
The final St. Ambrose score came in the second quarter
on a pass from Jerry Scherer to end Don Baumann.
DeKalb scored late in the third quarter as Harry Heni-
gan plunged over from the three.
Dubuque, la., Oct. 6—Loras college had possession
of the Iowa State Catholic College grid crown today
after downing a St. Ambrose eleven, 20 to 6, before a
record-breaking crowd of 9,000 here today.
It was the first time Loras defeated the Bees in 17
years. Both teams were undefeated in two previous
contests this season.

St. Ambrose opened the scoring with a 66 yard touchdown run by Jack Melligan in the first period, and Rocco
Carbone's placement for the extra point was good.
St. Mary's came back with a passing attack which
netted touchdowns in the second and third quarters, with
backs Don Finn and Bob McGill going over.
Jack Mooney, St. Ambrose 140 pound fullback saved
the opening game since Coach Larry "Moon" Mullins
returned to St. Ambrose, by rambling for two touchdowns in the third period.

loose a terrific ground and aerial attack tonight to
smother a slightly favored DeKalb Teachers college football team 20-7.
The Bees took an early lead when Don Doody went
over from the three yard stripe in the first quarter. A
St. Ambrose took an early lead of 6 to 0 in the first
quarter on a 50 yard touchdown run by Jack Melligan
but Loras passing paid dividends as two Loras touchdowns came on passes from John Rohan to Ralph Peterson
for 50 and 52 yards respectively. Third Loras tally came
on a sustained 43 yard march with Bob Hanlon going
over from the two yard marker.
The Loras victory marked the worst defeat that a
"Moon" Mullins coached Bee club ever received. In
1940 Mullins brought his team through undefeated and
unscored on, but Loras blemished that record somewhat by holding the Bees to a 0-0 tie.

Augustana College team, 26-6, before 8,000 fans Saturday to set a new attendance record. The win gave the
Bees the Quad-Cities championship.
