General John J. Pershing personally led the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. His image was used in an advertisement for the C.E. Goughnour & Son Department Cash Department Store in Ankeny, Iowa during World War I. It was given to Lester Alolph Sexauer by Geor. E. Goughnour.
