During the Baffle of the Somme in July 1916, an intense artillery barrage lasting seven days was laid down, and then the infantry advance was made on 1st July. The small Township of Montauban was captured by the British on the first day, but it had been utterly destroyed, except, that is, for the statue of the Madonna of Montaubau
