Description

This is a likeness of of Chief Mahaska the Younger, who was known to the white man as Frances White Cloud. Mahaska the Younger was the son of Chief Mahaska I of the Ioway Native-American Nation. When his father died, Mahaska the Younger was made Chief of the Ioway Native-American Nation at the young age of 22. Prior to Chief Mahaska I's death in 1834, all land in the Ioway Nation had been ceded to the American government and the Ioway Nation was moved to the northern part of the state until a proper reservation had been created for them in Omaha, Nebraska. Mahaska the Younger fell victim to white man's whiskey and was deposed of his position amongst his people. Mahaska died in 1852 at the age of 42. His son, James White Cloud, became the next chief in line of the Ioway Nation, despite having white blood in him from his mother, Mary Robideaux.
