Ames, Iowa.
My dear Dr. Pammel:
I beg to acknowledge receipt of the two copies of Iowa Grasses, also the one on the flora of northern Iowa peat bogs. As I look over these splendid publications, I think what fitting monuments they are to your most beautiful life, and with what pleasure and gratefulness I think of the number of years I had the privilege of being a pupil under you! It is impossible for you to know how much I appreciated all that you did for me, and to no small degree my success is due to your untiring efforts and patience in drawing out what little there was in me. I treasure these books most highly. Our Mr. Hosmer writes me a long letter to the effect that he has been there, and he speaks especially of you. He was very much impressed with your department and with you personally, which is no surprise to me, as an intelligent person could do no otherwise. I wish to be remembered to Mrs. Pammel and the girls (the young ladies now, I presume).
