Description

The Ambrosian
was suddenly struck from behind by the flying D'Artagnan and the terrific impact of the ferocious tackle carried him over the line where he lay huddled and motionless upon the ground. (This scene is not portrayed as
well as it might be, but an excellent description of a
similar scene may be found in "Fighting for Fairview",
"A Minute to Go", or "Tom Rover, Quarterback".)
Merriwell was soon revived and, supported by Sam
Langford and Bull Montana, he booted the oval squarely between the posts. The game was won.
The Moderns rose to their feet and threw wave
after wave of cheers. Not to be outdone the Ancients
rose to their unshod feet and threw bottles, chairs, and
curses across the field at the victors. The angry men of
the modern age jumped over the rail and started across
the field, 30,000,000 strong. Acting in self-defense
30,000,000 men of old also leaped over their rail and
moved out upon the field. The front ranks engaged in
bloody rough and tumble, while the rear ranks heaved
everything that they were able to lift. While this gigantic, earth-jarring, bloody
pandemonium was sanguinely and boisterously proceeding the battlers failed to notice
the black storm clouds rapidly darkening the sky. Soon the whole sky was covered
and it became dark as night. The lightning flashed across the sky, lighting up the
battle scene. The thunder boomed and crackled. The rain came down in deluges.
But still the battle raged. They fit and they fought and they fit. The water rose
higher and higher until the fighters were unable to fight any longer. Seeing the futility
of their endeavors the survivors swam, waded, and paddled out of the stadium to dry
land.
Abruptly the storm ceased, the sky cleared, and the moon, full and bright, bathed
the vast, empty, silent stadium wTith its soft silver light. The day ended. The modern
men proved their superiority over the men of old. Andrew P. Gump of New York,
in the short space of one day, became the greatest genius this world has ever known.
Andy, we doff our kellys to you.
And that's that.
A Nimrod
"Jake": Boyle, what's the matter? You seem to be
having a hard time with that fork. Can't you find your
mouth ?
Boyle: You'd never have that trouble, would you?
Not Always
Dr. Yancy: Now, when two bodies in motion come
together, is heat generated?
Nolan: No, sir. I bumped a guy yesterday and he
knocked me cold.
