Description

The Ambrosian
VERY REV. FRANCIS P. McMANUS
The students, faculty and Alumni of St. Ambrose College, through
the pages of the Ambrosian, tender to the Very Rev. Francis P. Mc-
Manus their heartiest congratulations and good wishes on his recent
investiture as Domestic Prelate. These sentiments are the more sincere in view of the fact that Father McManus is the first Alumnus of
St. Ambrose College to be thus honored by the Holy See. We feel
that this dignity comes as a well merited recognition of a life of zeal,
piety and fidelity in the vineyard of the Lord.
Very Rev. Francis P. McManus was born at Long Grove, Scott
County, Iowa, September 8, 1868. He was graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1889; attended St. Francis Seminary, St. Francis,
Wis., and was ordained by the Rt. Rev. Henry Cosgrove in the Sacred
Heart Cathedral, Davenport, Iowa. Fie was assistant to the Rev.
Michael Flavin at Des Moines, and afterwards pastor of St. Patrick's
Church, Brooklyn, Iowa; St. Timothy's Church, Reno, Iowa; St.
Mary's Church, Oskaloosa; St. Alphonsus Church, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
He became pastor of St. Xavier's Church, Council Bluffs, in July,
1908. His life and work in Council Bluffs have endeared him, not only
to the members of his parish, but to the people of the city as well, and
Council Bluffs feels that it also has been honored by the dignity w^hich
has been conferred upon one so dear to all.
The investiture of the Very Rev. Francis P. McManus as Domestic
Prelate in St. Xavier's Church, Council Bluffs, Wednesday, February
8, 1922, was an impressive ceremony. He was invested with the right
to wear the Roman curia, to vest in purple robes, and to wear the linen
surplice or the rochet with sleeves.
After the ceremony Solemn High Mass was celebrated by the Rev.
M. S. McNamara. The sermon was preached by the Rt. Rev. Bishop
Drumm, who took this opportunity and means of voicing his appreciation of the whole-hearted, sincere endeavors of Father McManus in the
care of souls. The presence in the sanctuary of so many of his confreres, gave evidence of the high esteem in which Father McManus is
held by all who consider it their privilege and good fortune to know
him.
St. Ambrose College rightly feels that these new honors conferred
upon Father McManus have been well merited; and to its tokens of
congratulation adds the hope and the prayer that Father McManus
will be spared for many years of labor in his priestly life. Ad multos
annos!
