Description
The Ambrosian
"UNDER COVER"
On Tuesday evening, June 7, 1921, "Under Cover", a four act melodrama, was
given before an audience that filled the college auditorium. On Tuesday afternoon
this same play, which was the last one of the school year, as well as the class play,
was presented before a capacity audience comprising students from St. Ambrose,
Immaculate Conception Academy, and Villa de Chantal, Rock Island. The cast had
practiced intensively for weeks preceding the presentation of the play so that on
Tuesday evening they did themselves proud by their masterful interpretation of their
parts.
John O'Donnell in the role of Steven Denby and Joseph Barnes as Daniel Taylor,
a deputy in the custom house, were easily the stars of the cast, not only because they
had leading parts, but especially because of their superb acting and freedom from
stage-consciousness. Edwin West as Ethel Cartwright and Bernard Hynes as Monte
Vaughn impressed the audience with their delineation of character. Qilbert Watters
and George Bouquot acted their parts in their usual efficient manner. Vernon O'Neil,
Bernard Rank and Hollis Barry successfully carried their difficult roles as "girls".
Lisle Mitchell and Joseph McCarthy displayed considerable talent in minor roles.
