Description

The Ambrosian
The Orchestra
ONE MONDAY afternoon
* * *
AFTER I HAD successfully
* * *
ENCOUNTERED dinner I
* * *
WENT OUT IN front and
* * *
STOOD ON the steps and
* * *
JUST THEN along came
* * *
MISTER PAARMANN who
* * *
IS THE Orchestra
* * *
INSTRUCTOR and he was
* * *
SMILING ALL over so I
* * *
SAID HELLO and he said
* * *
HELLO AND I asked him
how
* * *
WAS THE Orchestra and he
* * *
JUST LAUGHED like he was
* * *
USED TO IT and said
* * *
FINE I FEEL confident in
* * *
SAYING THAT never since
* * *
YOUNG Guispeppe Verdi
* * *
FIRST SHOWED his youthful
* * *
POWER AS A musical by
* * *
SMASHING up a piano with
* * *
A HAMMER has the art of
* * *
MUSIC BEEN so genuinely
* * *
COMPLIMENTED and I said
* * *
GOOD GRACIOUS Mister
* * *
PAARMANN what have you
* * *
EATEN FOR dinner but he
* * *
JUST LAUGHED and poked
* * *
ME IN THE ribs with his
* * *
VIOLIN CASE and walked
* * *
ON UPSTAIRS smiling.
* * *
HE IS A nice man that Mr.
* * *
PAARMANN. I wish there
were
* * *
MORE LIKE him. Pretty
SOON THE Orchestra began
to
* * *
TUNE UP AND you never
* * *
HEARD SUCH an awful lot
of
* * *
GROANS AND squeaks in
your
* * *
LIFE. BUT then they
* * *
BEGAN TO play and the
* * *
DIFFERENCE WAS wonderful.
* * *
I DON'T know what they
* * *
WERE PLAYING one of
those
* * *
INTERMEZZOS or an African
* * *
FOX-TROT OR something but
* * *
THAT DIDN'T matter it
* * *
WAS THE WAY that they
* * *
PLAYED IT and believe
* * *
ME IT WAS wonderful and
* * *
THAT'S ONLY letting out
* * *
HALF OF IT. You know it
* * *
MADE ME THINK OF THE
MOTTO OF Chesterfield
* * *
CIGARETTES OR the wav
that
* * *
MOTHER'S HOME-cooking
* * *
MAKES YOU FEEL. It's a
* * *
FUNNY THING but when
* * *
SCHOOL commenced Father
* * *
MEINBERG (HE directs the
ORCHESTRA) Didn't know
* * *
WHAT TO DO about it because
* * *
HE WAS handicapped for
* * *
PLAYERS SOMETHING
fierce and
* * *
HE TURNED pale when he
thought
THERE WOULDN'T be anyone to
* * *
PLAY THE Bassoon which
every-
* * *
BODY LIKED and maybe
he'd
* * *
HAVE TO HOCK the heckel-
phone
* * *
AFTER ALL because nobody
had
* * *
ENOUGH WIND TO play it
* * *
PUBLIC (OR maybe it was
not
* * *
ENOUGH INSURANCE I
don 't
* * *
KNOW WHICH) but Mr.
Paarmann
* * *
SAID TO Father Meinberg.
We'll
* * *
HAVE TO USE what we 've
* * *
GOT AND SO they did and
they
* * *
WORKED AND worked until
they
* * *
HAD AN Orchestra that anyone
* * *
COULD LISTEN to without
* * *
EAR-MUFFS OR narcotics.
It
* * *
WAS A BIG success & everybody
* * *
WAS SATISFIED from Father
* * *
HANNON TO MIKE the janitor but
* * *
JUST THE SAME it took an
* * *
AWFUL LOT OF effort and
you
* * *
GOT TO GIVE 'em credit and
* * *
MR. PAARMANN AND Father
* * *
MEINBERG CAN drop
around any
