Description

The Ambrosian
SODALITY
Although regular devotions to the Blessed Virgin were practiced from
the very beginning of the College, yet the Sodality was not formally organized until December 8, 1915. Then, under the direction of Father
Meinberg, the sodality was canonically erected and affiliated with the
First Primary Sodality of the Roman College under the title of the
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Philip Neri. Every
Catholic who boarded at the College was made eligible for membership ;
hence, a large and active membership was practically assured.
The work of the Sodality may be divided into two parts; at first,
each division was represented by a section of the members; later, it was
thought advisable to discontinue this idea. First, there is the Foreign
Mission work, which consists in the promotion of zeal and enthusiasm
for the missions. We are proud to claim as an alumnus, Rev. Bernard
Meyer, who has been engaged in missionary work in China for the last
three years. During the latter part of this year, efforts have been made
to raise funds to enable Father Meyer to support his Mission. Then,
there is also the Eucharistic part of the work which promotes devotion
to the Blessed Sacrament. The students are encouraged to receive
Holy Communion oftener and more devoutly and to put the teachings
of Christ into daily practice.
On December 11, fifty candidates were enrolled under the banner
of Our Lady. Meetings are held every Simday evening, a hymn is
sung, the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin is recited, and a short talk
is given by the Director, Father Meinberg. The subject of these conferences during the present year was the practical application of the
doctrines of Jesus Christ to everyday life.
Three years ago the prayers of the Sodality were offered for an early
and victorious end of the war. In thanksgiving for the ready and complete answer to their prayers, the members undertook to build a shrine
in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A fund was raised by subscriptions, but, on account of the excessive increase in the price of materials
due to the war, it was thought best to defer the building of the shrine
to a later date. At the present time prospects are brighter, and work
may soon begin on a suitable shrine, which will ever remain as a substantial memorial to the zeal and devotion of the Sodality.
