The Ambrosian
VARSITY BASKETBALL
Activities on the gridiron had scarcely been brought to a close when the St. Ambrose
athletes turned their attention to the basketball floor. In this branch the Saints were
confronted by a difficult schedule which they completed with fair success. It is true
that in more than one game the final pistol shot was fired while the Varsity was on
the short end of the score; however, it was a season of reverses even for teams which
little expected to meet them, and St. Ambrose was no exception in this respect. But at
no time was the team one to be considered lightly by an opponent; whether rewarded
by victory or disappointed by defeat the team of '22 always played a game which
needs no apology.
The opening struggle was with the strong Phi Kappa Fraternity team from Iowa.
It was hardly more than a practice game, but it showed that we were going to have a
good team, one that would be always fighting to the end no matter how the contest
would go. This tilt was won by a score of 23 to 10. In the next encounter the Wisconsin School of Mines was expected to furnish some stiff opposition but the Varsity,
showing mid-season form, were able to defeat their opponents with comparative ease
to the tune of 31 to 12.
The first two post-Christmas games were lost to the Muscatine Professionals and
the University of Dubuque by the respective scores of 23 to 22 and 22 to 11. On
January 19th the team left for a six-days' trip through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and
Northern Iowa where they encountered some very stiff opposition. In the first game,
they played the Wisconsin State Normal team, against whom they put up such an
exhibition of brilliant basketball that until the final whistle it was very uncertain who
was going to come out ahead. They gave the Teachers one of the stiffest games they
ever played and only lost by a score of 23 to 20. Determined not to leave Platteville
without winning a game, they defeated the School of Mines the next evening by the
decisive score of 25 to 5.
Campion opposed the Ambrosians in the third game of the trip. In this game the
Saints outplayed their opponents but not sufficiently to offset the advantage which the
size and arrangement of the court gave to the local team, and the latter emerged victorious by a score of 17 to 13. In this game the effects of three consecutive games
were apparent in the Varsity's playing.
However, after an over-Sunday rest the team displayed an entirely different front
on Monday when they locked horns with the crack St. Mary's five and handed them
their first reverse of the season. The Varsity, putting up a flashy offense and stubborn
defense, captured the game by a 20 to 15 score. Clean playing featured the contest.
On the way home, Coach Gould and his men, stopping at Dubuque for a return game,
were defeated by the Germans, 28 to 14.
On Saturday evening, January 28th, still sluggish as a result of the trip, the Saints
crossed the river to engage with Augustana for the first of a two-game series. For
some reason or other the team, hitting a slump, seemed to have no life or pep and
"Augie" easily defeated them by a 30 to 6 count.
