Description

The Ambrosian
MIDGET FOOTBALL
FIRST ROW—Adrian, Merchie, Wiggers, Coughlin, Till, Johnson,' Sparks, Balluff, Ruhl, Kuhl.
SECOND ROW—Campbell, Degen, Chenaux, Norton, Woeber, Ross, E. Powers, Miclot, J. Powers.
While the Midget football games were few and far between this year, the "Tiny
Saintlings" set up a record which is indeed a credit to any eleven. In three games
which made up the entire schedule they scored sixty-six points while their own goal
was not crossed once during the season. Under the able leadership of Capt. George
Till, the Midgets had beyond a doubt the fastest and most powerful lightweight grid
team in this locality.
Father Adrian found it almost impossible to schedule games with teams which were
the same age and weight as the Midgets on account of the wonderful record which
they had set up in previous years. The Intermediate teams which played them last
year refused a game with the scrappy little "Tiny Saintlings".
Troop Ten of the Moline Boy Scouts was the first victim of the Midget eleven.
In this game the small Ambrosians were greatly outweighed, but their speed and cleverness proved too much for the Scouts who were defeated 26 to 0. The Rock Island
Independent Midgets, like the Scouts, tremendously outweighed the Midgets but
were not fast enough to break up their clever shifts and were downed by the wide
margin of 27 to 0. The St. Joseph High eleven of Rock Island was probably the
stiffest opposition that the "Tiny Saintlings" ran up against. However, the Midgets
had little difficulty in defeating them by the count of 15 to 0.
Like the Juniors, the Midgets used the open play style to a great extent and to good
advantage. The forward pass and the end run were employed repeatedly and were
always good for a substantial gain. The backfield men, although greatly outweighed
in all games, were able to make consistent advances through line plunges. Till and
Miclot were the steadiest ground gainers while Coughlin and Johnson were the outstanding stars of the forward wall.
