Description

"MERRYWIDOW" Captivates Community
Amid a flourish of Paris color
comes Franz Lehar's beloved "Merry
Widow." The wealthy and beautiful
widow, Madame Sonia, is welcomed
to Paris by a lavish ball arranged
in her honor by the Marsovian Ambassador, Vladimir Popoff, and every
bachelor in Paris is anxious to meet
Sonia. In the night of the gala celebration, Popoff receives an urgent
phone call from the king of Marso-
via, who tells him that Marsovia
was "in hock" to the widow's late
husband. If Sonia should marry a
Frenchman, Marsovia would be lost.
Popoff immediately sends for crown
prince Danilo of Marsovia to win
the widow from her French admirers. Danilo has been accustomed to
lingering around Maxim's theater
restaurant with the can-can girls.
When he finally arrives at the embassy, he is accompanied by six of
the Maxim's dancers. He is discovered there by Sonia, who once
was his sweetheart. They were to be
married, but since she was then a
poor country girl, the king, Danilo's
uncle, vetoed the match. She still
loves the prince, but acts coldly
toward him, because she feels she
has been jilted. At the ball she
announces she will stage an authentic
Marsovian party at her village. At
the party, Sonia accosts Popoff to
learn what fascinates Danilo at
Maxim's. Later that night, Natalie,
Popoff's wife, is discovered in the
summer house with Pierre Jolidon.
To save Natalie from embarrassment, Sonia takes her place. Sonia
uses the compromising situation she
is in with Jolidon to arouse jealousy
in Danilo, announcing that she will
marry Pierre. The prince runs off
in anger to Maxim's. Sonia knows
now that Danilo still loves her, and
she is also "off to gay Maxim's." At
Maxim's, Sonia and Popoff both
have come to see Danilo. Novikovich
and Khadja arrive at Maxim's with
a letter from the king stating that
Marsovia is in a state of panic because Sonia is to marry a Frenchman. As a result, Popoff makes one
final attempt to persuade Danilo to
marry Sonia. Sonia tells Danilo the
truth about the summer house incident. Danilo finally admits his love
for her, and . . . you guessed it!
