Description

LECTURE SERIES 1963-1964
Ambrosians were privileged to
have an interesting variety of informed speakers this year. These
guests were invited by campus clubs,
the Student Council and the Faculty Program Committee.
Mr. Charles Toney of Davenport
opened the discussion on racial relations. Continuing in the social
field were Mr. John Salter, Mrs. Ella
J. Baker and the Rev. Eldon Cox, of
CORE (Congress on Racial Equality).
The role of the Church in the
world of today brought the Rev.
David Stanley S.J. who spoke on
"Biblical Scholarship Today", and
Professor John Norris who discussed
the field of law. The Rev. Ildefonso
Cabrera of Ecuador reviewed the
social changes in his home area.
After the second session of the Ecumenical Council, Bishop Hayes reported the work to a gathering of
faculty and diocesan priests. "The
Role of the Church in a Technological Society" was the topic of the
Abbe Francois Houtart. Mr. Gerry
Reynolds and Mr. Kevin Lawler
spoke on "Papal Volunteers". Mr.
Don Wooten presented a lecture on
Rev. David Stanley, S.J.
The 1963-1964 speakers covered
topics which were of interest to the
modern college student. After all
the lectures the students and faculty
were offered the opportunity to express their own opinions or to question the speaker further. It was a
most stimulating series.
Mr. John Salter
Rev. Eldon Cox
Mr. George McLellan
the philosophy of Teilhard de Char-
din. Concluding the religious theme
was a lecture on the "Christian Layman" by Mr. Michael Novak.
Current political issues were the
concern of several meetings. Former U. S. Congressman, Chester Earl
Merrow spoke on the United Nations, Mr. Jack Miller, U. S. Senator
from Iowa discussed party politics
with the Young Republicans, Dr.
David Blanchard explained the work
of the International Labor Organization, and World Federalism was
presented by General J. H. Roth-
child, U.S.A. Ret., and Mr. Lowell
Erickson.
The St. Ambrose Affiliates of the
American Chemical Society opened
their year's program when they presented Mr. George McLellan to the
student body and faculty.
