Description
Commencement
Summer
The cool formal lounge of the
College Center was the setting for
summer commencement on July 26,
1963. Miss Monholland, Registrar,
Mr. John Quail, Speaker, the Most
Rev. Ralph L. Hayes, Bishop of
Davenport, and the Rev. F. J. McMahan, Acting President, listen to
Rev. Joseph E. Kokjohn read the list
of candidates upon whom Bishop
Hayes was to confer the bachelor of
arts degree.
Mr. John J. Quail, a member of
Corporation, spoke of the importance
of alumni to their Alma Mater. He
urged them to be "actively interested" and "By so doing, you will not
only promote the affairs of St. Ambrose but you will, I am sure, help
yourself and derive therefrom a great
deal of personal satisfaction as well
as pleasure."
The speaker then turned to a review of the free enterprise system
and made a plea for greater support.
He stressed the need to be vigilant
to ward off bureaucracy. "No one
should try to tell others what to
think, how to vote, or what economic
or political policies to promote. However, I hope you, as educated and
dedicated people, will study the
trends and not be carried away by
glib promises."
Amateur photographers were on hand to
record on film the eighty-first Commencement at the College.
