Description
Carrying the processional flags
James Wilkerson and Richard Aubry
led the graduates, faculty and participating clergy into Sacred Heart
Cathedral for the Baccalaureate
Mass, Sunday 26 May, 1963.
In his sermon Archbishop Byrne
told the graduates of St. Ambrose,
Mercy Hospital School of Nursing
and Marycrest College that it is their
duty to operate in the world and,
at the same time, to christianize it
economically, politically and morally. He stressed the advantages they
have had and the consequent obligations to be leaders in society.
At the Commencement exercises
during the afternoon, degrees were
conferred by Bishop Hayes to the
338 graduates of the Colleges. Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees were
presented by the Most Rev. Ralph
L. Hayes to the Most Rev. James
J. Byrne, Archbishop of Dubuque
and to U. S. District Court Tudge
Edward J. McManus of Cedar
Rapids.
"Have faith in your convictions,
loyalty to the truth, perseverance in
your tasks and you will have serenity
of the spirit" declared Judye McManus. He continued to emphasize
the need of ethical standards and
citizenry's need to test actions in
accordance. He urged the graduates
to "make your daily prayer to know
the truth and to have faith to live
by it always."
Commencement was followed by
the reception in the College Center
for the graduates, their families and
friends.
