regarding certification requirements for teachers in Illinois and Iowa. Approximately twenty
per cent of Ambrose graduates qualify to teach in the midwest.
"To foster a professional interest
in the problems and responsibilities
of teaching" is the aim of the Sigma
Pi, Student Education Association.
The organization was chartered on
December 13, 1954, by the Iowa
State Education Association and the
National Education Association. The
group, functioned actively for a few
years, and then became inactive until the fall of 1960. Membership is
open to those interested in the teaching profession and in good standing
at St. Ambrose. Membership this
past year totaled fifty. Several members attended the Southeast Regional
meeting of the Student ISEA, held
at Marycrest College on November
6. This program was based on the
theme, "Social Responsibility". St.
Ambrose was also represented by
Charles Roeder, Lawrence McNertney, and William Stier at the
State Convention at Des Moines in
early February. Club discussions had
dealt with student teaching experiences and censorship.
