Description
Again his face changed, a look of pity spreading over what was not covered by the
horn-rims, and I heard him murmur, "Ah! poor fellow! He is hurt worse than I
thought."
He proceeded at once to get his car started. But when he came to help me into the
car, I asserted my right as an American citizen to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and my idea of happiness just then was to get rid of my almost-murderer and
would-be-benefactor.
I collapsed on the ground. I told him that I couldn't be moved in anything but an
ambulance or a hearse and that he would have to go to town to get one or the other.
His expostulations and entreaties were in vain, and, being unable to carry me, he had
no alternative but to get into his car and go for aid.
As soon as I heard the sound of his motor die away in the distance, I stood erect.
Making the best haste I could, I was soon behind the wheel of my old Lizzie which I
found with the motor still running.
Although I was stiff and sore for the balance of the trip, by the next day I was at fit
as ever with no ill effects from my harrowing experience except the words "Non-skid"
stamped across my chest in the "Ford Motor Club" colors, which you know are black
and blue.
