Description
A Vision—
Special Correspondent—(Of course this is none of my business and I know the
Editor will be very displeased when he sees this; but I feel I must let the world know
that not even the Editor of a newspaper, wherein he records all the foibles and weaknesses of other people, is absolutely above reproach.)
Our Editor, West, was destined to serve Mass on the high altar for one whole week.
On the first morning he did fairly well until he came to serve the Priest atfer Holy
Communion; he stood by the side of the altar with the cruets in his hands, apparently
attentive to his duty, but—!
No movement! No action! Was he alive?—Or what? Coughs from the congregation ! An air of tense feeling permeated the sanctuary; a soft, mild voice whispered,
"Mister West!"—"Mister West!" Came a third, "Mister West!"
And then I knew! Mr. West was sweetly sleeping at a most solemn post! What
put him to sleep? His own personal devotions? Had he an ecstasy? I could hardly
believe it! Had he been studying too late? I put this thought aside as too preposterous for consideration. Had he lain awake thinking of Benny? Ah! Perhaps!
Such a noble thought! So fitting! I still wonder. So do others! But we unworthy,
unpoetic souls—!
At last an almost loud, "Mister West!!!!!" And then, with a sigh, he came to, and
served the remainder of the Mass, faultlessly, perfectly, angelically!
