Description

SCENE IN THE DAY DODGERS' STUDY HALL
McCarthy (continuing conversation) : "And say, Andy, what would you do in a
case like that?"
Glenn: "Well, I don't know what I would do. Better ask 'Jose'. He's up in
society and is better able to give you advice."
McCarthy: "How about it, Jose?"
Barnes (awakening from his two-Marie day dream) : "What—er—er you guys talking about ?"
McCarthy: "Well, you see it's this way. Last night, while reading the movie ads,
I ran across this at the end of the LeClaire Theatre ad. It ran like this: 'If you don't
take her to the LeClaire, someone else will.' Now what I want to know is this. Do
you believe this is true? Did it ever happen to you? I've lain awake all last night
thinking it over. Every five or ten minutes I called her up to make sure she was at
home. I thought this ad might include me."
Barnes (used to giving such fatherly advice) : "Well, now, Marty, I'm glad you
came to me for advice. If you had gone to O'Donnell or anyone else I don't think
you would have fared very well. Now I wouldn't take it so hard, Marty. In the
first place, I don't believe that ad and I'm sure that your friend would not be so rude
as to turn you down. I don't see how anyone could turn you down with that appealing
smile of yours. But if you really believe there is truth in that statement, substitute the
Capitol instead. I don't think she is mean enough to make you go away over there.
She knows your bedtime hour and will try to get you home by that time. That's all
right, Marty; if you have any more troubles come and see me. Run along to class
now."
McCarthy: "Thank you, 'Jose', for your good advice and if it works I will remember you." (To himself) "Oh, what a load off my mind! Now I can sleep in
peace."
