Description
WITH OUR FORMER STAFF MEMBERS
Readers who have been following the fortunes of our Ambrosian for a number of
years may find some items of interest in these notes about the men who used to publish
our Annual:
Rev. Cletus J. Portel is an earnest and faithful worker in our neighboring diocese of
Des Moines. Father Portel has the distinction of being the Ambrosian's first editor.
Recently he completed a post-graduate course in history at the Catholic University of
America at Washington, D. C.
Mr. C. S. Costello, business manager in '20 and '21, has gained new laurels for
himself at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Those who remember the
dramatic ability that he displayed here will not be surprised to learn that he has won
a prize in oratory at Creighton.
Mr. Harold F. Britt, assistant editor of the '21 publication, has established himself
as one of the valued salesmen of the Syndicate Clothing Company of this city. Mr.
Britt was also a member of our advertising staff in 1920 and this no doubt accounts
for his business ability.
Rev. M. G. Morrin, the 1915 editor, is in charge of the Department of Expression
at St. Ambrose and is also director of the College Choir.
The Ambrosian of last year published an account of the splendid work accomplished by Rev. T. V. Lawlor, our 1913 sports editor. As pastor of St. Mary's
Church, Mechanicsville, Iowa, Father Lawlor is as popular and as successful as ever.
Our 1919 staff deserves our best congratulations. At the conclusion of the current
year no less than three of its members are to be ordained to the holy priesthood.
Newman Flanagan, the editor, Raymond Kinnavey, the business manager, and Paul
Moore, head of the humorous department, will receive Holy Orders.
Ernest Casey, the '21 editor, after receiving his A. B. degree last year, has enrolled
himself in the ranks of the educators. Mr. Casey holds the position of superintendent
of schools at Pulaski, Iowa.
Mr. Harry Shields, business manager in 1915, is devoting his time to the clothing
business in Clinton, Iowa.
Mr. James B. Reidy, the '22 editor, is studying this year at the Sulpician Seminary,
Washington, D. C. Jim was greeting old friends at St. Ambrose during the midyear
vacation.
Rev. James J. Welsh, our first humorous editor, is very ably discharging the office of
director of athletics at St. Ambrose.
Mr. Joseph Wagner, assistant editor in 1919, has for the past two years been pursuing his studies in the Washington Seminary.
Mr. Henry Crimmins, business manager in '13, has joined the Society of Jesus and
is now an instructor at Rockhurst College, Kansas City, Missouri.
