Description

MR. WILLIAM HYNES
One of the most enjoyable features of ur last Homecoming program was an exceptionally fine address by Mr. William Hynes, an Academic graduate of 1914. After
doing his part in the great war Mr. Hynes took up a business career and at the present
time is the owner of and active head of a large and prosperous concern, the Hynes Coal
Co. of Des Moines.
Mr. Hynes' remarks on the occasion just mentioned threw a very interesting light
upon the school activities of his day here. Many and amusing were the incidents he
recalled. Aside from these remarks he took occasion to urge upon the college Alumni
the necessity of assuming in their respective communities the position of leadership to
which their training calls them. That address was a real treat and the sentiment
voiced in it deserves all praise.
We are also indebted to Mr. Hynes for his words of appreciation and encouragement in regard to our quarterly publication. A recent letter from him has helped
those in charge of our latest literary endeavor to feel that their efforts are not being put
forth in vain.
Our great need today is Alumni who realize the importance of their position as
Alumni of such an institution as this, and who are also ready to take an interest in,
and assist as far as possible, the various activities of their college. In both respects
Mr. Hynes has set an example worthy of imitation. We are far from unmindful of
his assistance and we shall endeavor to profit by his example.
MR. H. J. COSGROVE
In the offices of the McCarthy Improvement Company, we had the good fortune to
meet Mr. J. H. Cosgrove. We found that about the year 1912 this very estimable
gentleman was very busily engaged learning his lessons in the Commercial Department
of good old St. Ambrose, and subsequent events would indicate that he learned them
well.
Mr. Cosgrove himself disclaims any ability except as an authority in pitch. However, we had formed some conclusions of our own upon the subject and were loath to
give them up. A closer investigation confirmed our judgment. As a matter of fact
Mr. Cosgrove was a valued employee of the Gorden Van Tyne Company for six years.
At the end of that time he cast his fortunes with the McCarthy Company, where for
several years he has been proving his worth to the entire satisfaction of that concern.
Aside from his business achievements he has also succeeded in securing for himself the
blessings of married life, and he shows with equal advantage both in the family circle
and in the field of commercial endeavor.
The life of Mr. Cosgrove since his graduation here has been both a busy and a useful one. It is the work of such men as he has proved himself to be that causes us to
look forward with pleasant anticipation to the day when we may number ourselves
among the Alumni of St. Ambrose. May Mr. Cosgrove prosper in the greater things
which we know he will be called upon to undertake in the future.
