water (and on Saturday night, too! Horrors!!). Forced by circumstance to complete
his ablution in chilling icy liquid, he contracted a bad cold which rendered him speechless. Nevertheless, the two insisted on contesting; so the examination was held. Mr.
Dehner, with the taste of "cork" still in his mouth, sang with a decidedly Irish accent ( ?), while Mr. Duggan spoke in a delightful whisper. It was a toss-up between
the two. But Father Morrin, being Irish himself, and deceived for a moment by the
apparent genuineness of Mr. Dehner's brogue, was inclined to be partial.—He has
since learned his mistake.
Also, Mr. Duggan has forsworn Saturday night baths.
Despite all that may be said to the contrary, the business of maintaining a choir is a
serious proposition. Even in my own limited experience I have encountered instances
which served to drive home that point. When I was very small, I sang in a choir.
(Which was indeed not an uncommon thing for small boys to do.) The choir grew to
such large proportions that a director was secured to keep them in check. But the
director took up so much room, both with his corpulent body and his frantic wavings,
that it was thought advisable to build additional floor space to the choir loft. But by
the time this was completed the director had fallen sick and died, and the church pews
had to be sold to pay the carpenter's bill. All of which only goes to show that you
can't tell what a director 's going to do next.

But as this is all there is, I fear that there shall be no more. Therefore I will make
three dainty asterisks, thusly:
* * *
After which I shall feel greatly relieved. Eric.
