Description
MIDGET FOOTBALL
The Midget Football Team of 1922 completed a schedule of more games than did
a similar team in any previous year. Incidentally they won more games. "Bring on
the teams; we'll turn in the victories," seems to be the motto of our Midget champs.
Weight and experience apparently were not an insurmountable handicap. Meeting a
team of their own weight and age would be something new to a Midget team.
Captain John "Aubrey" Devine led the team from half back. He showed, by his
ability to heave passes and run the ends, that his team-mates had made a wise selection
in their choice for captain. Austin at quarterback has the earmarks of a gridder fully
capable of upholding the standards of play set by former Junior quarterbacks. Com-
merford and Grady did good work at fullback and halfback respectively. On the line
G. Lawler was a conspicuous figure at tackle. He was in every play, fighting and
keeping up the "pep" of his mates. Volz at center passed well, and very few gains
were made through his territory.
Space forbids saying more about other individuals. I might say that picking individual stars would be a difficult task. Teamwork is the keynote to Midget success.
They undergo the same training as their older brothers, the Juniors. They also exhibit the same spirit and take a great interest in the work handed out to them. Father
O'Connor coached the Midgets of 1922, and to him goes the credit for the biggest
share of their success.
The opening game was played on October 7th with the Rock Island All-Stars as the
opposition—first and last defeat of the season—score 16 to 0. The North Davenport
Tigers were defeated on October 15th by a 24 to 12 score. St. Joseph's of Rock
Island, the Midgets' "ancient" enemy, suffered a 25 to 0 setback on October 21st.
The Geneseo Independent Juniors gave the locals their stiffest opposition on October
28th in a 7 to 0 Midget victory. November 4th saw the Harrison Street Gridders
taste a 27 to 0 downfall. In a return game St. Joseph's of Rock Island held the
Midgets to a 0 to 0 tie score on November 15th. The season's record stands: 4 victories, 1 defeat, and 1 tie, out of six games played.
The second team Midgets played two games with the Rock Island Midgets, the first
game ended in a 6 to 6 tie, and the second game resulted in a Midget "win", 18 to 13.
