St. Ambrose 55 — Quincy 0
St. Ambrose 28 — Loras 12
Sunday, September 8, Quincy, 111.: The
St. Ambrose Bees opened the '49 season with
a surprising 55-0 victory over a Quincy College
eleven which could not patch up the big holes
in its air defense. The Quincy team, coached
by Mac Wenskunas, played the Bees on even
terms practically the whole first half. Largely
because of Jack Mooney's running, including
an 82-yard punt return, the Bees led at halftime
19-0.
In the second half bombardiers Don Berg,
Art Nixon and Lee Matera began hitting the
bullseye for counters, 29 points being run up
in the pass-mad fourth quarter. Score by
quarters:
Sunday, October 2, Dubuque, Iowa: St.
Ambrose smashed a two-year victory skein
by Loras over the Bees, stunning the Duhawks
28-12 in their own sanctum, Rock Bowl. The
defeat left the partisan Loras overflow of
10,000 weak with surprise and disappointment.
In the cautious early minutes neither team
threatened to score but by intermission the
Duhawks had grabbed a 6-0 lead with a 35-
yard touchdown pass.
Led by Don Doody, the Saints' little man of
power, the Bees hit the Loras team with a
roundhouse, scoring three touchdowns in nine
minutes of the second half. Score by quarters:
St. Ambrose 6 13 7 29 55
St. Ambrose 0 0 21 7 28
Quincy 0 0 0 0 0
Loras 0 6 0 6 12
