St. Ambrose 28 — U. Corpus Christi 16
Friday, September 23, Davenport: The
St. Ambrose Bees opened the 1949 home
season by slapping down a stubborn Corpus
Christi team which had come all the way from
Texas. The final score was 28-16.
Trailing at the half 16-7, the Bees roared
back in the third quarter on a threadlike 91-
yard punt return by Art Nixon and a powerhouse number by Don Doody from a short way
out. Doody added another in the last quarter.

St. Ambrose 20 — St. Joseph 12
It was on this Homecoming afternoon that
the St. Ambrose eleven disposed of its last
Midlands conference opponent to take the
championship. The Pumas were stubborn at
first but were worn down by newcomer Bob
Bevenour's two touchdown thrusts and Art
Nixon's 55-yard sprint.
On the line forwards Michalik, Lucas,
Forbes and Newell stymied the wild Pumas and
held them to a harmless 50 yards. Score by
