The objective of the St. Ambrose Forensic
Society, as contained in its constitution, is to
establish and encourage forensics on the campus, and to promote creditable representation
of St. Ambrose College in all forensic activities.
Membership is granted any student approved by the society's board of admissions.
Keys of merit are awarded members by
a point system. These points are accumulated
through the individual's participation in debates, discussions and public appearances.
There are four degrees of key membership.
Forensic tournaments participated in during the 1949-50 season included invitational
meets at Grinnell, Knox, Iowa State Teachers,
Northwestern and Drake. Competition at these
meets included some of the nation's biggest
universities.
It was no simple task for the St. Ambrose
debaters to match opponents from such schools
as Iowa, Illinois, Loyola, Wisconsin, Nebraska,
Marquette, Florida, Georgetown, Augustana,
Knox, and Monmouth.
In addition to the tournaments the Am-
brosian debaters were active in two other fields,
both locally. They appeared before local
clubs and presented interesting discussions on
subjects of great appeal to these clubs, some of
which were church groups and some civic.
Many of the members received their first radio
and television tests. The debaters presented a
series of broadcasts over radio station KWPC,
Muscatine, Iowa, and appeared on the television screen of WOC, Davenport, Iowa.
