Photo of the Iowa City Public Library. Carnegie Library with north side addition, June 1975.
An addition of 14,000 square-feet was built onto the Carnegie building and dedicated on Sunday, November 10, 1963. The need for more library space was primarily attributed to an increased population and a record-breaking amount of library circulation.

Description
An account of the resource
The Iowa Library Commission was established in 1900 by an Act of the twenty eighth General Assembly to promote library interests in the State of Iowa. It was with this legislation that the Traveling Library was transferred from the State Library to the authority of the Iowa Library Commission. It was felt that a Library Commission provided the most practical means for an aggressive, systematic extension of library privileges to all the people of the State. The Commission was engaged in promoting public libraries, providing Traveling Library collections to the entire state, advocating training opportunities for librarians, advising readers on Iowa library laws, publishing the gathered statistics of Iowa libraries, and much more. This collection consists of the biannual reports of the Iowa Library Commission made to the Governor of Iowa. The dates range from 1900 to 1938.
