Title A name given to the resource Buildings - East Campus Subject The topic of the resource Community colleges - Iowa Kirkwood Community College College buildings - Iowa Campus planning - Iowa Description An account of the resource In 1966, the Area Ten Board selected a site one-half mile south of Highway 30 on Bowling Street for its new campus. The 315-acre site was purchased for $407,500 at an average cost of $1,300 per acre. In the summer of 1968 construction began on the "transitional campus". The erection of the buildings was completed in time for the start of classes Fall 1968 and housed the Arts and Sciences classes until a permanent building could be built. The new campus was constructed in the middle of a corn field, hence, the commonly referred to name, "the college in a cornfield", was originated. Title A name given to the resource Buildings - Linn Hall Description An account of the resource Linn Hall is the first permanent building on the main campus. Construction began in 1968 and was ready for classes Fall 1969. Indicative of Kirkwood's "can-do" spirit, the college contracted with two contractors to help speed the construction to avoid paying increasing rent charges to lease office and classroom space throughout the city of Cedar Rapids. The dedication was held on October 26, 1969. The building was re-dedicated on August 14, 2014 after three years of major renovations.
