Zebra mussel explosion: profound change in US water systems

Cut-paper sculpture created from catalog cards.
The idea to transform cards from the University of Iowa Libraries card catalog appealed to me. Here is this workhorse of a system being retired. It was a successful system. Many library patrons using it were successful. I fantasized one or more of the cards to be touchstones to trigger my creative process. In the end I chose to pursue my current interest in the history, ecology and stories of the Great Lakes and surrounding waters. Specifically, "Zebra Explosion: Profound Change in US Water Systems," is a comment about change. It is a three-dimensional hand-cut paper drawing.
My paper cut work began during the summer of 2002 when I invented a cut paper map of the river I grew up on in Western Michigan. With an Exacto knife, I "draw" marks into paper. Each cut is definitive and intractable. The process forces me to make decisions and to take aesthetic risks that my other media, such as paint does not demand.
