Robert J. Moyle letters, 1862-1906

Description

Moyle, a resident of Hillsboro, Iowa, (Henry Co.), was a member of the 25th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers and participated in the siege of Vicksburg and encounters at Dallas, Georgia. His letters, addressed to his parents, include descriptions of battles, camps, and the health of the troops. He injured his leg in a barge accident, contracted typhoid fever, and died on June 27, 1864 at Boston Iron Works, Georgia.

Description

Papers describing the war experiences of Palmer, who was from Washington County, Iowa and fought with the 8th Iowa Infantry and later the 25th Iowa Infantry. He was severely wounded in the Battle of Shiloh but recovered and was promoted to captain and eventually lieutenant colonel and took part in the siege of Vicksburg and Sherman's March to the Sea. After the war he was a state senator and railroad commissioner.
