An account of the resource
The State Law Library of Iowa, located on the second floor of Iowa’s Capitol, is home to the A. J. Small Room, which houses the Law Library’s Special Collections. It contains materials from Iowa’s pioneer library, selected by Iowa’s first governor, Robert Lucas, and purchased in and transported by steam boat from Cincinnati to Burlington in 1836; legal materials documenting Iowa’s legendary legal cases, such as Re the Matter of Ralph, decided July, 1839; materials purchased by A. J. Small, longtime state law librarian, in Europe after WWI; and a variety of other rare and notable documents. Items in this digital collection represent a sample of materials from the Law Library’s Special Collections.

A portrait of Theodore Parvin is included in the Annals of Iowa article "A Library in the Making: Pioneer History of of the Territorial and State Library of Iowa."
In 1838, Robert Lucas, who had been appointed Governor of the new Territory of Iowa, selected Parvin for his private secretary. He accompanied the Governor to Burlington, where he was appointed to take charge of the Territorial
