Noun was a social activist, art collector, and author of several books on women's history. Smith was a political activist who fought for equal rights and became the first female chair of the Republican National Committee. Together, they founded the Louise Noun - Mary Louise Smith Iowa Women's Archives, which opened in 1992 at The University of Iowa Libraries.
