George Washington Carver
Description
An account of the resource
After receiving his education at Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University), George Washington Carver gained an international reputation during his career at Tuskegee University. His research resulted in the creation of 325 products from peanuts, more than 100 products from sweet potatoes, and hundreds more from a dozen other plants native to the South. These products contributed to rural economic improvement by offering alternative crops to cotton that were beneficial for the farmers and for the land. This digital collection contains images of Carver as well as letters and correspondence between Carver and Iowa State colleagues. The majority of correspondence is to Carver's mentor, Dr. Louis Pammel, on a variety of scientific topics. Only a portion of the George Washington Carver collection housed in the Special Collections Department is represented in this digital collection. In 1924, native Iowan Eve Drewelowe received the first graduate degree in fine arts granted by The University of Iowa. She then married Jacob Van Ek, moved to Boulder, and embarked on a 13-month trip around the world that she documented in seven travel sketchbooks. After a health crisis in 1940, Drewelowe rededicated herself to her painting. Working in impressionist, social realist, and abstract expressionist styles, she has had artworks displayed nationally in solo exhibitions. Drewelowe continued to paint until her death in 1988.

Description
An account of the resource
Brian Duffy was born on May 9, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Duffy began his career at the Des Moines Register in 1983, where his cartoons quickly became popular and his work earned multiple awards. Duffy’s career at the Register ended abruptly in 2008 when his position was terminated by the company during budget cutbacks. Today, Duffy remains in the Des Moines area and continues to produce artwork on his own and through a local news station.

Brian Duffy was born on May 9, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Duffy began his career at the Des Moines Register in 1983, where his cartoons quickly became popular and his work earned multiple awards. Duffy’s career at the Register ended abruptly in 2008 when his position was terminated by the company during budget cutbacks. Today, Duffy remains in the Des Moines area and continues to produce artwork on his own and through a local news station.
