Mary Noble Historical Photograph Collection
Description
An account of the resource
This is a collection of postcards with a focus on images of women, depicting life in Iowa during the early 20th century. The collector was Mary Noble, a librarian at the University of Iowa. She was born in Berwyn, Illinois in 1945. She attended the Riceville, Iowa public schools, graduating from Riceville Community High School in 1963. She received her BA in Sociology from the University of Iowa in 1967 and her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1968. She was hired as a cataloger by the University of Iowa Libraries in 1968 and continued to work there for more than three decades. She began collecting historical photographs in the 1980s, purchasing them at antique stores, photograph shows, and fleamarkets. After the Iowa Women's Archives opened in 1992 she began donating photographs to the archives, with special attention to images of women and by women photographers.

Title
A name given to the resource
Mildred Wirt Benson Collection
Description
An account of the resource
Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson was an American journalist and author of children's books, in particular the earliest Nancy Drew mysteries. Writing under Stratemeyer Syndicate pen name Carolyn Keene from 1929 to 1947, she contributed to 23 of the first 30 originally published Nancy Drew mysteries.
Benson was born Mildred Augustine in Ladora, Iowa to Lillian and Dr. J. L. Augustine. She married Asa Wirt, who worked for Associated Press, and, after Wirt's death in 1947, married George A. Benson, editor of the Toledo Blade newspaper of Toledo, Ohio three years later. He died in 1959. She earned her degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1925, returned and earned her master's degree in journalism in 1927, the first student to do so there. She worked for 58 years as a journalist, writing a weekly column for the Toledo Blade and continuing to work full-time (mostly writing obituaries) until a few months before her death, from lung cancer, in 2002 at the age of 96.
Benson also wrote many other series, including the Penny Parker books, which were published under her own name and which she told interviewers were her favorites.
This collection includes the title pages, advertisements, and tables of contents of some of the novels she wrote. There are also pictures, letters and other personal memorabilia.
