Title A name given to the resource Mary Noble Historical Photograph Collection Description An account of the resource This is a collection of postcards with a focus on images of women, depicting life in Iowa during the early 20th century. The collector was Mary Noble, a librarian at the University of Iowa. She was born in Berwyn, Illinois in 1945. She attended the Riceville, Iowa public schools, graduating from Riceville Community High School in 1963. She received her BA in Sociology from the University of Iowa in 1967 and her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1968. She was hired as a cataloger by the University of Iowa Libraries in 1968 and continued to work there for more than three decades. She began collecting historical photographs in the 1980s, purchasing them at antique stores, photograph shows, and fleamarkets. After the Iowa Women's Archives opened in 1992 she began donating photographs to the archives, with special attention to images of women and by women photographers. Although Hine and her colleagues centered their efforts on African-American women in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan -- states which traditionally have had more sizable black populations than Iowa -- the history of African-American women in this state is no less important. I've always liked paper-the feel of it and the sound of it. I recall fashioning "garments" out of the thin, brown, crunchy-sounding paper my father's dry cleaning came back in when I was a little girl. I wrapped myself up in this paper with the help of some tape and traveled to the land of imagination…. When card catalogs became obsolete, it saddened me. First of all, I always thought the cabinets themselves looked good. Most important, however, was now I could never root around in all those lovely pasteboard cards - finding what I was looking for and often discovering things I hadn't been looking for. I'm used to electronic retrieval systems, but they lack the snug, comfortable friendliness of the old cards. Thanks for a chance to relate to old acquaintances again. Samuel Calvin, Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Iowa (1873-1911) exhibited important geological features both in and outside of Iowa with his glass plate camera, but his photographs of Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus show its history in beautiful detail. Frederick Wallace Kent followed as lecturer and instructor in photography at the University beginning in 1923, and later founded the University Photo Service in 1947. Kent captured not only university life such as sports and graduation in detail, but also photographed commercial and residential buildings off-campus in Iowa City, both from the ground and above.
