Description

A handler with a black Percheron draft horse of unknown name and age. The photograph was taken next to an Iowa State College (Universtiy) horse barn.
The Department of Animal Husbandry was established in 1898. At that time, the department had five breeds of horses, six breeds of cattle, seven breeds of sheep, and breeds of swine used for classes and research in breeding and feeding. Also in 1898, students in the Animal Husbandry participated in the first intercollegiate livestock judging contest at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska. Throughout the 20th century, the curriculum has focused on animal breeding and nutrition, meat and milk production, and pork, poultry, beef, dairy, sheep and equine systems management. The name of the Department was changed of the Department of Animal Science in 1962. The Department of Poultry Science merged with the Department in 1971.

Barnett, Percheron draft horse stallion, 1931

Description

The black Percheron draft horse stallion, "Barnett", foaled April 25, 1927..'(American Percheron stud book registration number 205134; sired by Bacarat, out of Black Jane) as a 4 year old during the time that he was owned by Iowa State College (University). Purchased in February of 1931 by J.G. Hanmer, farm superintendent at the time, he was subsequently sold to the University of Alberta animal husbandry department. A large horse, he weighed over 2200 pounds when this photograph by the horse barn was taken in April of 1931.

Hog pens near college barns, 1958

Description

This 1958 photograph shows pastures and lots near the college barns. In the middle of the photograph appears a pen with several hogs and huts that house them.
The history of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences begins with the founding of the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm in 1858, with classes beginning in 1869. As a land-grant institution, Iowa State was founded primarily to provide practical education in agriculture and the mechanic arts. Through the years, agriculture courses and short courses have focused on agricultural engineering, agronomy, animal husbandry, dairying, forestry, and horticulture. In the 21st century, the focus is on animal and the plant sciences, biotechnology life sciences, sustainability, and global development.

Description

The brick Horse Barn on the left, built around 1900, with the Iowa Agricultural College Experiment Barn and the Judging Pavilion on the right. Two beef cattle are shown being led into the Pavilion as several men also approach the area.
The Horse Barn was built around 1900 using brick construction materials. This structure was later remodeled in 1930-1931 for use by the Landscape Architecture Department.

Cattle Barn, 1958

Description

The Cattle Barn with three silos used for feed storage are shown. Feed lots appear in the foreground, including a long feed bunk for feeding the cattle. Several men are working between the feed bunk and the barn which has the doors opened to the hay loft above. A loaded hay wagon is seen to the right of the barn.
The Cattle Barn, generally known over the years as the Beef Barn, was a U-shaped building, with east and west wings approximately 32 by 168 feet connected by an 80 foot unit that included a domed drive through opening to access the courtyard. The barn was constructed of brick with a classic gambrel style roof that included numerous gables for light and ventilation.
