This history published was entitled; Past and Present of Mahaska County, Iowa. The book documented short, yet detailed, biographical accounts of citizens that lived and contributed to Mahaska County between 1844 and 1906. Hedge was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, on June 22, 1846. At a young age, Hedge moved to Eddyville, Iowa, and attended Eddyville High School. Following high school Hedge attended Oskaloosa College and became a teacher in Wapello County in 1866. In 1878 Hege became the principal of all schools in Beacon, Iowa in Mahaska County. In 1886 Hedge became the Superintendent of schools in Mahaska County, serving four years (2 terms) at that post. Subsequently, Hedge opened a bookstore which eventually became known as Hedge Brothers. In 1902 Hedge started a wall paper business. During his adult years, Hedge served as a board member of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Hedge was married to Laura Skaggs on February 21, 1877, and together they had three children. Upon Laura's death in 1892, Hedge remarried Anna Brolliar on December 19, 1900, and had one child.","Manoah Hedge","Mahaska County Collection","The S.J. Taken around 1861, the Civil War was the first American War in which much of the conflict was documented through photography. Officers and non-commissioned officers were issued swords to illustrate their rank and importance to the rest of the platoons, divisions, and regiments making up the Union Army. The home was located on Park Place on the northeast side of Oskaloosa. The home burned down in May 0f 1924. At the time it burned down, the McNeill home was one of the finest homes in all of Mahaska County. It was built and lived in by railroad and coal tycoon, H. W. Beacon's success revolved around its coal mining connection and proximity to the railroad lines. Before Oskaloosa, the county seat of Mahaska County, established a railroad line through its community, many goods came via railway to Beacon, allowing it to grow and become a thriving community. At one time, Beacon had its own town square. McNeill. Born June 18, 1847, in Peoria, Illinois, Hobart W. McNeill studied at the University of Virginia until the school was closed by the Confederacy. Afterwards, McNeill went to the University of Michigan to study law and was admitted to the bar in Springfield, Illinois in 1868. In 1869, he moved to Eldora, Iowa to form a law office with Enoch W. Eastman, former Governor of Iowa. In 1870, McNeill began his lucrative career in the railroad industry, becoming a special agent for the Iowa Valley Construction Company, which was responsible for building the Iowa Central Railroad. In 1872, McNeill became the secret agent for the St. Louis and St. Paul Railroad and eventually became president of that railroad. Recognizing the amount of money that could potentially be gained in the coal industry in connection with the railroad, McNeill formed a partnership with his brother, W.A. McNeill, to begin the Iowa Central Company, which eventually was merged into the Consolidated Coal Company. After many profitable years, the McNeill's sold their stock in the company to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company for $500,000.00 in cash in 1881. Afterwards, H.W. McNeill continued his expertise in the railroad industry, among others. By the time of his death on January 27, 1900, H.W. McNeill had established himself as one of the brightest businessmen not only in Oskaloosa, but in the state of Iowa, and all of the United States.
