An account of the resource
Professor F. E. Brown observing a chemistry student in the lab. The student is using a dropper to add liquid to a test tube. Three other students are working in the background.
The Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm offered chemistry classes to its first classes in 1869. The department was formally established in 1871, and served students in Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Home Economics and Veterinary Medicine. The Chemical and Physical Laboratory was constructed in 1870-1871, and after it burned in 1913, a new building, Chemistry Hall, was built to replace it. Department Chair, Winfred Coover (1914-1944) expanded the teaching system and emphasized independent research throughout World War I and the post-war period. With the advent of the Ames Laboratory and World War II, the Chemistry Department further developed its cutting edge and interdisciplinary research programs in addition to its teaching. In 1973, Chemistry Hall was renamed Gilman Hall, in honor of Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Henry Gilman. The Department also has laboratories, classrooms and offices in Hach Hall. The Chemistry Department is now part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University, and also frequently partners with the Ames Laboratory.

Dr. Morehouse and Astronomy at Drake
Description
An account of the resource
In 1908, Dr. Daniel Walter Morehouse discovered a comet while studying for his graduate degree at the University of Chicago. He was awarded the Donahue Comet Medal for his discovery. After earning his PhD from the University of California, he returned to Drake in 1914 as an astronomy professor. He served as University president from 1922 until his death in 1941.
Even after becoming university president, Morehouse remained an avid astronomer, teaching at least one astronomy course each semester. His ashes, and those of his wife, Myrtle, are interred inside the observatory.
This collection contains publications and photographs related to his tenure as university president as well as his activities in the field of astronomy.

Iowa City Town and Campus Scenes
Description
An account of the resource
The Iowa City Town and Campus Scenes Collection contains work by the two photographers who were primary in capturing the history of the Iowa City area for over a century. Samuel Calvin, Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Iowa (1873-1911) exhibited important geological features both in and outside of Iowa with his glass plate camera, but his photographs of Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus show its history in beautiful detail. Frederick Wallace Kent followed as lecturer and instructor in photography at the University beginning in 1923, and later founded the University Photo Service in 1947. Kent captured not only university life such as sports and graduation in detail, but also photographed commercial and residential buildings off-campus in Iowa City, both from the ground and above. Together, these two photograph collections are an invaluable pictoral piece of Iowa City history.
